Fiona McKay is interviewed live on BBC News as expert menopause career coach

On Thursday, 28 July 2022, Fiona McKay was interviewed live on BBC News channel by Geeta Guru-Murthy, giving her responses to the report from The Women’s and Equalities Committee, recommending that menopause have its own stand-alone protected characteristic under The Equality Act.

Does Fiona endorse the report recommendations and what did she discuss?

Fiona is in full agreement that menopause should be a stand alone protected characteristic, making employers duty bound to make reasonable adjustments, take menopause discrimination in the workplace much more seriously, and be aware of increased legal protection and recourse if women are overlooked for promotion, treated less favourably or directly discriminated against because of their menopause status.

And let us not forget that after childbirth, menopause is the second most career limiting issue for a working woman. There is legal protection under the Equality Act for pregnancy and maternity status, and therefore it should follow suit that menopause be included, especially as menopausal women are the fastest growing demographic in the workplace.

How can companies retain senior leading women through menopause?

Fiona shared her expertise on where employers can start to make investments to enable senior leading women to be retained in their roles through menopause. She gave examples of the menopause career challenges that female CEO’s have to struggle with on their own, especially if they are high profile and leading publicly listed or high growth companies and why investing in menopause career planning and exclusive and discreet 1-2-1 career coaching and support is key.
